The Xianyitang 八珍湯 (Bā Zhēn Tāng) — literally 'Eight Treasure Soup' — is a classic Chinese herbal soup blend of eight dried ingredients: rehmannia root (地黄), poria (茯苓), codonopsis root (黨參), white hyacinth bean (白扁豆), polygonatum root (黃精), asiatic cornelian cherry (山茱萸), astragalus root (黃芪) and Chinese angelica root (當歸). The combination creates a full-bodied broth with a deep, mildly earthy character, well suited to pork ribs, pork bones or chicken.
Produced under an ISO 9001-certified quality management system. Rinse all ingredients thoroughly and soak in warm water for 15–30 minutes before use. Add to a pot with pork ribs, pork bones or chicken and simmer until fully cooked through. The rehmannia root will give the broth a dark, rich colour.
Typical uses: Chinese herbal pork rib soup, slow-cooked chicken broth, traditional eight-treasure tonic soup.
Goes well with: Pork ribs, pork bones, chicken, lean pork, red dates (大棗), goji berries (枸杞子).
Each pack is pre-portioned for convenience. Rinse the ingredients, add to a pot with your chosen meat and approximately 1.5 litres of cold water, bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer for 1–2 hours. Season lightly before serving. Serves 2–4.
